Aged Care Placement in Melbourne Independent Guidance for Families

Choosing residential aged care for a parent or partner is overwhelming. My Evervale’s placement team gives families independent guidance on the providers, costs and process. Free initial consultation across greater Melbourne.

When families ask us for help

Most families come to us at one of three moments:

  1. A hospital is asking where Mum will go next — and you have 48 hours to decide.
  2. Care at home is no longer safe — falls, dementia, medication errors are mounting up.
  3. You’re planning ahead — your parent is independent now but you want a clear plan.

What aged care placement involves

  • Confirming ACAT approval for residential care
  • Understanding fees: accommodation payment (RAD/DAP), basic daily fee, means-tested care fee
  • Shortlisting homes that match: location, language, religious or cultural preferences, dementia capability, palliative care, room type, vacancy timeline
  • Visiting the homes and asking the right questions
  • Reading the latest Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission star ratings
  • Negotiating the Resident Agreement and Permitting Agreement
  • Managing the move-in

Questions to ask any aged care home

  • What is your current Star Rating from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission?
  • What was your most recent compliance audit outcome?
  • What is your registered nurse coverage — 24/7 on-site or on-call?
  • What is your staff-to-resident ratio across each shift?
  • How is dementia care delivered? Do you have a secure dementia unit?
  • What is the daily routine — wake-up, meals, activities, family visits?
  • What languages do staff speak?
  • How do you handle palliative care and end-of-life?
  • What is the RAD (Refundable Accommodation Deposit) and is it negotiable?
  • What additional services have a fee on top of the basic agreement?

Understanding aged care fees

Four fees can apply to residential aged care:

FeeWhat it pays forWho pays
Basic Daily FeeLiving costs (food, laundry, utilities)Everyone — set at 85% of single age pension
Means-Tested Care FeeCare costs above what the government subsidisesHigher-income/asset residents only
Accommodation Payment (RAD or DAP)Your roomEveryone — but low-means residents get government support
Additional Service FeesExtras (premium room, wine with meals, salon)Optional

We strongly recommend speaking with an aged care financial adviser before signing — the financial decisions you make at entry can affect age pension eligibility and your estate.

How My Evervale's placement service works

  1. Free 30-minute consultation — phone or in-home — to understand the situation
  2. Shortlist of 3–5 suitable homes with available beds, costs, star ratings and our notes
  3. We arrange the visits and attend with you if helpful
  4. Move-in coordination — paperwork, transport, settling in
  5. Ongoing advocacy — we stay involved through the first 90 days

Independent and honest about it

My Evervale is itself an aged care provider. If our own residential service is the right fit, we’ll say so. If a competitor’s home is a better fit for your loved one, we’ll tell you that too. The placement consultation is free either way.
