The four signals that actually matter
- Star Rating — published by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. Look at the overall rating and the four sub-ratings (residents’ experience, compliance, staffing, quality measures). A 4-star home with 5-star residents’ experience tells a different story than a 4-star home with 5-star compliance only.
- Direct care minutes per resident per day — published. Government target was 215 minutes/day with at least 44 of those from a registered nurse.
- 24/7 registered nurse on site — required by law in residential care since October 2023.
- Compliance history — search the provider on the ACQSC website. Sanctions, notices to remedy and revoked accreditations are all public.
The questions to ask on a tour
- “Walk me through what happens if Mum has a fall at 2am.”
- “Show me the activity board for this week — what’s actually happening today?”
- “Tell me about your last serious incident — what changed because of it?”
- “What’s your staff turnover, and what are you doing about it?”
- “Can I speak to a current resident’s family member?”
- “What languages do your staff speak?”
- “How do you handle dementia behaviours without restraint or PRN sedation?”
- “What does your end-of-life care look like? Can family stay overnight?”
Red flags
- The tour is rushed or you can’t see the dining room during a meal
- Residents are sitting in front of TVs in common areas, no engagement
- Staff don’t know residents by name
- The home won’t share Star Rating or compliance information openly
- The contract has lots of “additional service” charges beyond the basic agreement
- You can’t get a written quote of total expected monthly cost
- The provider is reluctant to discuss recent complaints
Comparing home care providers (different criteria)
For home care and Support at Home, the comparison framework is different:
- Care management fee — under Support at Home this is capped, but compare exact percentages
- Hourly rates and weekend/evening surcharges
- Continuity — will the same carer come most visits, or rotating staff?
- Clinical hours — how many registered nurse hours per month does your package buy?
- Languages spoken — especially for cognitive decline, mother-tongue carers matter enormously
- How responsive when needs change — ask “if Dad has a fall on Friday night, what happens?”
- How transparent the monthly statement is — ask for a sample
Where My Evervale fits
My Evervale is itself an aged care provider. If our own residential service is the right fit, we’ll say so. If a competitor’s home is a better fit for your loved one, we’ll tell you that too. The placement consultation is free either way.
