Aged Care Categories 1–6, explained.

Under the new Aged Care Act 2024, every registered aged care provider in Australia must register against one or more of six service categories. My Evervale is registered for all six so we can support your loved one through every stage of their journey.

Why categories matter

The Aged Care Act 2024 replaces the old, fragmented system with a single registration framework. A provider’s category determines what kind of care they can legally deliver. Most providers register against one or two meaning families often have to switch providers as needs change.

My Evervale is purpose-built to register across all six categories. That means a person can come to us for occasional in-home help, transition to more Support at Home as needs grow, then move into our residential aged care home — all with the same care team and continuous records.

The Six Categories

What each category covers

1

Home & Community Services

Day-to-day support that helps older Australians remain independent at home and connected to their community.

2

Assistive Technology & Home Modifications

Equipment, technology and home changes that support safe, comfortable living at home.

3

Advisory & Support Services

Guidance, navigation and care planning to help families understand their options and choose with confidence.

4

Personal Care & Care Management

Hands-on personal care delivered by trained, vetted carers coordinated by a dedicated care manager.

5

Nursing & Transition Care

Clinical nursing care and short-term transition support after hospital wherever you call home.

6

Residential Care (incl. Specialised Support)

24/7 residential aged care including dementia-specialised environments when home is no longer the safest option.

How categories map to the care your loved one needs

You don’t need to know which category fits that’s our job. But here’s a rough guide:

  • “Mum just needs a bit of help around the house” → Categories 1, 4
  • “Dad needs help showering and his medications managed” → Categories 4, 5
  • “We need a stair lift and a shower rail” → Category 2
  • “We don’t know where to start — can someone explain our options?” → Category 3
  • “Mum needs a registered nurse to manage her wound care” → Category 5
  • “Dad’s dementia means he needs 24/7 specialised care” → Category 6 (specialised)

Why we register for all six

Aged care needs change. Often slowly, sometimes overnight. The traditional model forces families to switch providers when needs escalate losing trusted relationships, established routines and clinical history at the worst possible moment.

By being registered for all six categories, My Evervale can:

  • Start with a small home-care arrangement and scale as needs grow
  • Add nursing or allied health without bringing in another provider
  • Coordinate assistive technology and home modifications in-house
  • Transition into our residential home with continuity of care team
  • Deliver dementia-specialised support when needed

What the new Aged Care Act means for providers

The Act came into force from late 2025, replacing the Aged Care Act 1997. It introduces:

  • A new Statement of Rights for older Australians, with enforceable obligations on providers
  • The strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards now seven standards focused on outcomes, not paperwork
  • The Support at Home Program, replacing Home Care Packages from 1 July 2025
  • A unified provider registration system with the six service categories
  • Stronger oversight by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission
